Russian remains the lingua franca of the former Soviet Union, with more than 250 million speakers worldwide. U.S. government agencies have identified Russian as a priority language of national need, so there is a demand for Russian-language specialists.
The largest country geographically in the world, Russia shares borders with many European and Asian countries. The Russian capital, Moscow, is not only Europe's largest city, with more than 11 million people, but is a cosmopolitan destination for artists, musicians, writers, and commerce.

Most students at Howard University have a foreign language requirement to graduate. Depending on their major, students typically take between two to four semesters of a foreign language. Enrolling in Russian language courses at Howard will count towards the foreign language requirement. The course sequence for the basic Russian language courses is as follows:
